Autism Parenting 101

As a parent of a child with Autism, this book has been incredibly insightful. I vividly remember the diagnosis and the struggles that followed, particularly with communication. For years, I grappled with managing both my emotions and my child's. Understanding their needs, recognizing signs of illness, and navigating the complexities of autism were significant challenges. This book is an invaluable resource for parents of autistic children, offering guidance on everything from financial planning to celebrating milestones, legal considerations, and preparing for the world beyond childhood. It's well-written, easy to read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who knows someone with autism or is looking to deepen their understanding of the condition.

Understanding your child is so important.

Great book to read. Seeing through my child's eyes now and understand my child is incredible. Cried a couple of times in a good way. Communication on how your child talks will make life easier on both of you. It's teamwork.

Only the basics

This book was okay. It covered a lot of basics. I felt like it only dug into the surface in some areas, addressing a lot of the common knowledge topics. I really didn’t like the section about advocacy, because I am not a spokesperson for my daughter’s story. I will advocate on her behalf to doctors and teachers, but I have no desire to hand out flyers at a fair or create a community event. I don’t give up on books, so I muscled my way through this one, mainly because the author really wanted me to leave a review. Here you go.

If you’ve spent an hour on Wikipedia, you’ve read this book.

In its defense, this book is literally called “Autism Parenting 101” so I should’ve known not to expect expert advice, but the information here is so extremely basic that I initially felt swindled reading through it. “This is what autism is. This is what ‘stimming’ is. Did you know that stimming is okay? Here is the difference between public and private schools. Private schools cost more money. Did you know there might be community resources near you? Try looking on the internet!” If you have a child with autism, you’ve probably spent at least one late night anxiously searching the internet already: this book probably will not tell you anything new.The only audience I can envision for something like this is perhaps older grandparents who know nothing about autism or how to search for it on the internet. It is not really for “experienced” parents, as the cover suggests, nor will it help you understand “the world of an ASD child”. There were several grammatical errors, as well as some other hallmarks of AI involvement in its development, which isn’t inherently a bad thing to me, but they did stand out if that kind of thing matters to you. What it DOES do well is provide a high-level overview of what it’s LIKE to be a parent of a child with autism. I think this would be a good resource for backup caregivers, so it is not without value. I’ll be passing it along knowing the purchase helped put groceries on the table for a family probably strapped for resources already and won’t be mad about it, but if, like me, you are a parent of a child with autism and were looking for something to talk about the day-to-day struggles, this might not be right choice.

A Practical Guide for Autism Parents/Caregivers

This book offers a compassionate, no-nonsense guide for both new and experienced parents navigating the world of raising a child with autism. Drawing from real-life experiences, the author provides practical advice, proven strategies, and personal stories to help families manage meltdowns, foster communication, and advocate for their child’s future. While not a fan of the self-help genre myself, I can see this as an excellent starting point for those new to the journey, offering clarity, hope, and support for the road ahead.
